It's official! ABC has just announced that Katy Perry will be a judge on the American Idol reboot.

The network reportedly began talks with Perry after the deal with Kelly Clarkson fell through last week. Clarkson, of course, surprised us when she announced she was joining The Voice on NBC.

Perry's role marks the first (and only) casting announcement about Idol

It sounds like Ryan Seacrest is close to signing on board as the show's host. Plus, US Weekly is reporting that former Idol finalist Daughtry is in talks to be a judge on the show. It is not clear how close that deal is to being finalized at this point.

This all pretty interesting because we weren't expecting too much star power on the Idol judging panel because of concerns over the talent fees. Costs for the talent were a huge factor in why FOX canceled the show from its original run.

Katy is, of course, having a big week. She announced yesterday that her new album (Witness) will be released in June. Plus, she unveiled plans for a North American tour this fall. Perry will cap her busy week by being the musical guest on the season finale of Saturday Night Live this weekend.
